Canada: UNBC unveils new bio-energy heating project

November 5, 2014 by Carrie Annand

A new bio-energy project being installed at UNBC is the first of its kind in North America.

Assistant Director of The University’s Facilities – David Claus says the third phase of their project will connect the campus’ day care and residences heating system, aiming to increase warmth and decrease greenhouse gas emissions.

“What that will allow us to do is, the hot water heat, that we use to heat the buildings, we can use that same heat, to heat the residences and day care ,” he says.

Claus says it uses both waste wood from saw mills and a pellet boiler and this is the first time a twin-pipe system has been used for a project like this in North America.

North Carolina: Event showcases bioenergy in Caldwell

November 5, 2014 by Carrie Annand

By Derek Lacey, Oct. 23, 2014 @ 01:40 PM

GAMEWELL —Each day, Randy Dellinger’s plant on Virgina Street in Lenoir churns out about 7,000 gallons of diesel fuel, ready to be pumped into any diesel engine.

But Dellinger’s diesel isn’t made from fossilized carbon. It’s made from soybean and canola oil, and poultry and pork fat. It’s biodiesel, and Dellinger’s company is Foothills Bio-Energies.

Dellinger explained his process and product to a small group Wednesday during a tour, his way of helping to celebrate the second annual National Bioenergy Day, a nationwide effort to advocate bioenergy in the U.S. that is sponsored by the Biomass Power Association, U.S. Forest Service, and U.S. Industrial Pellet Association, among others. Bioenergy is the use of any organic material to generate heating, cooling, electricity or, in Dellinger’s case, fuel.

The U.S. Forest Service Chippewa National Forest Ranger Station in Walker, Minnesota, celebrated the second annual National Bioenergy Day Oct. 22 by hosting an open house at its Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design certified facility, with a focus on the facility’s pellet wood boiler installation. The open house included a tour of the facility, as well as presentations from U.S. Forest Service Civil Engineer Jay Smrekar, Jeremy Hanson of WoodMaster, the pellet boiler provider, and T.J. Morice with Marth Wood Shavings Supply Inc., the pellet supplier.

“We’ve been involved with this great, new building we have here that incorporates some bioenergy, so we’re here to participate in this national event,” Smrekar said. “Really our primary focus is to just raise the awareness of bioenergy and biofuels.”

It was observed several times Wednesday that the second annual National Bioenergy Day at Murray State University had attracted quite a large and diverse group.

Perhaps it was because they came to witness history, which they did before the event officially began around midday. In the morning, as had happened a few months earlier, several busloads of observers from all walks of the bioenergy spectrum arrived at an undisclosed field somewhere in Calloway County.

And there they saw what has been documented as the first industrial hemp crop legally planted in the United States since around World War II, harvested and then baled.
