Register for Bioenergy Day 2016!

May 5, 2016 by Carrie Annand

We are pleased to announce that the Fourth Annual Bioenergy Day will take place October 19, 2016!

2016-logoAs in years past, Bioenergy Day 2016 aims to enable all organizations with a stake in bioenergy – business, academia, government and non-profit – communicate its many benefits.

Next month, on May 17, at 2pm ET/11am PT we will begin to hold monthly planning calls for the Fourth Annual Bioenergy Day. These calls, held the third Tuesday of each month, are designed to focus on the many elements needed to hold a successful Bioenergy Day event. To join the call, dial 207-805-8183.

Last year, the U.S. House of Representatives Biomass Caucus held its kickoff event on bioenergy day, with a panel discussion on Capitol Hill about the issues facing bioenergy. Ontario Energy Minister Bob Chiarelli recognized the benefits of biomass. Sixty organizations across the country, including the State of Kentucky and Louisiana State University, held major events to spotlight their involvement in bioenergy.

This year, we have a few changes in store. We’re forming the Bioenergy Day Steering Committee to help advise us in growing this important annual event. We’ll be announcing the members of this committee soon.

We’re also seeking input on the focus of our 2016 Bioenergy Day video. In 2014, we explored the partnership between the U.S. Forest Service and Eagle Valley Clean Energy in using for biomass the dead and damaged trees around Vail, Colorado, that have been infected by the pine beetle blight. Last year, we documented the role of biomass power and pellets in the forest products industry of Northern Maine. Together, these videos have received nearly 3,000 views.

This year, we’re hoping to engage with sponsors to help us update this website and hire a part-time organizational assistant. If you are interested in playing a leadership role in the growth of Bioenergy Day, or seeing your organization’s logo on the Bioenergy Day materials that will be seen by thousands of biomass supporters, please contact me, Carrie Annand, at [email protected].

We look forward to working with all of you, and here’s to a successful Bioenergy Day 2016!

National Bioenergy Day 2015

April 28, 2016 by Carrie Annand

Thank you to all who worked hard to participate in the Third Annual National Bioenergy Day! We counted more than 60 groups participating – about a 30% increase over 2014.

This year, in addition to the dozens of great events held across the United States and Canada, we saw significant support on the federal level. The U.S. Forest Service served as a partner for the second year, and the Department of Energy’s Bioenergy Technologies Office also provided support.

The newly formed Congressional Biomass Caucus held a kickoff event on Capitol Hill with a panel discussion on bioenergy. (Please see a recent column by Bob Cleaves in Biomass Magazine.) The discussion encompassed many aspects of the complex bioenergy industry – forest management, power, thermal and pellets. Now counting 17 bipartisan Caucus members, co-chairs Rep. Bruce Westerman (R-AR) and Rep. Annie Kuster (D-NH) intend to shed more light on bioenergy issues.

Canadian officials also got in on National Bioenergy Day activities, with Ontario Energy Minister Bob Chiarelli making a statement and the British Columbia Government officially marking the day.

Social media mentions of #bioenergyday numbered well into the hundreds, especially with the Department of Energy tweeting 8 times throughout the day to its more than 250,000 followers. New participant Abengoa also tweeted several times to its 15,000 followers. The buzz contributed to the 2015 video surpassing 1350 views in just over a month.

National Bioenergy Day 2015 Participation Guide

April 29, 2015 by Carrie Annand

It is already time to start thinking about National Bioenergy Day 2015, which will be held Wed., October 21 (in the middle of Forest Products Week)! Last year, bioenergy supporters across United States and Canada showcased how their involvement in bioenergy helps their communities. Private sector, non-profit organizations, academic institutions and federal and state government offices contributed to nearly 50 events – doubling the size of NBD 2013.

We are excited about NBD this year and look forward to expanding participation even more than last year! This year, we encourage National Bioenergy Day participants to emphasize the economics of bioenergy, especially the many jobs created and supported by the making energy from organic materials.

Below is this year’s official Participation Guide, which we created in partnership with the U.S. Forest Service.  This guide contains planning checklists and timelines, as well as template materials. It is intended to help National Bioenergy Day participants brainstorm and plan for involvement in NBD. Simply click the link below to download the guide.

We look forward to working with everyone! As always, please be in touch with questions and keep us posted on your plans.
